National Weather Service Increases Snow Totals For Friday; Pencil Prediction on School Closings and Delays

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 4am on Friday and remains in effect until 7pm Friday evening. After a slight shift the south on most weather models this morning and afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) has increased the forecasted totals on its latest snow maps.

In the “Expected Snowfall” map, 2-3 inches of snow is forecasted for DC and areas immediately surrounding the city, while 3-4 inches of snow is now expected for the upper half of Montgomery County, upper half of Loudoun County, Howard County, and most of Frederick County. The “Reasonable Worst Case Scenario” map shows 4-6 inches for most of the area, while the “Low End Amount” map shows 1-2 inches for the area (all maps available below). There’s now also an approximate 47-70% chance at over two inches for most of Montgomery County.

This storm is looking very similar to the one from earlier this week, which also trended in favor of snow lovers as we got closer. It’s still expected to be relatively light, but the timing will likely cause impacts as the snow sticks to the cold ground. Its expected to move into the area between 3am-5am and finish up in the early afternoon.

Pencil Prediction for Friday, January 19th: 4 Pencils

Unless things trend lower tonight, I think it’s likely that schools will be closed tomorrow. As mentioned in previous updates, if there is a snow day it will not be a Code Purple (Virtual Learning) day- it would be a regular snow day, and will likely have to be made up.
