GoGuardian, a tool currently available for teachers to monitor their student’s online activity while they’re in the classroom, has been eliminated from the MCPS budget starting next school year.
The announcement was made by MCPS Chief of Strategic Initiatives Stephanie Sheron at the January 23 Board of Education meeting. In the meeting, Sheron stated that in the last year approximately 6,000 teachers (of approximately 15,000) used GoGuardian at least once. In the last month, approximately 3,000 teachers have used it at least once, with most users coming from a handful of secondary schools.
Sheron stated that the elimination of GoGuardian will be offset by going back to traditional ways of implementing classroom management strategies regarding the use of technology along with working on a digital balance resolution to think about “how are we making sure our teachers are utilizing their chromebooks, but that’s not the only thing they’re using throughout the day.”
