Montgomery County History Day Competition is Seeking Judges

Calling community members and would-be historians: local students need your help! The 2024 Montgomery County History Day competition is coming up on Saturday, March 9, and the competition is looking for judges.

Middle and high school students have been conducting research, diving into primary sources and creating presentations. The competition is seeking volunteers at least 18 years old and older to serve as judges in evaluating student work. The goal is to encourage and foster a passion for history.

At the contest, students present their research in one of five categories: exhibits, performances, documentaries, websites or papers. Judges evaluate entries based on historical quality and effectiveness of presentation. Evaluations use a national rubric and judges are trained before the event via a Zoom session.

The event is from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on March 9 at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School, 12701 Goodhill Road in Silver Spring. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Prior experience is not necessary.

Students selected to represent their schools compete at the county event; top entries chosen by the judges advance to the Maryland History Day state contest at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in May.
