The National Weather Service (NWS) has already issued a Winter Storm Watch for the mountains and we suspect a Winter Weather Advisory or even a Winter Storm Warning if things continue to trend upwards in the area.
According to the latest map from the NWS, a lot of the area is currently forecasted to received 3-4 inches of snow. This includes Montgomery County, Loudoun County, Howard County, Frederick County, and more. DC, most of Prince George’s County, and most of Fairfax County are currently in the 2-3 inch range. The “Reasonable Worst Case Scenario” map shows 5 inches for most of the area (seen below) while the “Low End Amount” shows 1 inch (seen below).
As it looks now, the storm is coming in around midnight (give or take an hour or two) and heading out by around 8am Saturday morning. It’s a fast moving storm, but will have enough moisture and the temperatures for the snow to stick and accumulate quickly.
The major travel impacts will be overnight Friday into Saturday morning. The sun is expected to come out following the storm on Saturday, which should help melt some of the snow away. Temperatures near 50° with mostly sunny skies will help melt most of what’s left on Sunday.
