
A Gaithersburg man was convicted today for a bank robbery he committed in September, 2021.
According to Montgomery County State’s Office, “Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Sharon Burrell, a jury found defendant, Samuel Harry Powell Jr., 59, of Gaithersburg, guilty on charges of armed robbery and robbery.
Powell faces up to 25 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 12, 2024.
This stems from an incident on September 29, 2021, at the BB&T Bank located on the 400 block of N. Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg. The defendant entered the bank wearing a medical mask. He handed the teller a note demanding U.S. currency in 100’s, 50’s and 20’s and displayed a handgun. The defendant obtained approximately $1,400.00 and exited the bank. The robbery was captured on surveillance video.
Powell was arrested on October 1, 2021, following a police investigation. He had previously served prison time on federal bank robbery charges stemming from prior incidents.
Assistant State’s Attorney Gabe Carrera is prosecuting this matter.”
