4:42pm Update: All lanes now open
A traffic incident that occurred earlier today and previously closed two lanes of southbound I-270 in Gaithersburg on Thursday afternoon has now closed all lanes and traffic gets by on the shoulder.
The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Managament and Homeland Security tweeted the following at 12:57pm: “Traffic incident closes two left lanes of southbound I-270 before Watkins Mill Road (Exit 12). Expect significant delays. Seek alternate route. #MdTraffic”
At 2:59pm the following update was sent: Alert Montgomery – Severe Traffic Alert Update 1
Update 1: Traffic incident now closes all southbound lanes of I-270 before Watkins Mill Road (Exit 12). Traffic gets by on the right shoulder. Expect major delays. Seek alternate route.
According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the closures are due to “debris in roadway” and delays are approximately two miles.
We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.
