Construction progresses at Neelsville Middle School, located at 11700 Neelsville Church Rd in Germantown. The project, which includes a brand new school building, is expected to be completed by August with students beginning in the new school building next school year (photo above and below).

The new Neelsville Middle School is being constructed on the same site as the current school. After the new building has been constructed, the old building will be demolished and replaced with recreational fields and other amenities to make up for similar facilities currently located where the new building will be built. The facility will be built for a capacity of 1,063 students with a master-planned addition of 6 classrooms for a master-planned capacity of 1,190 students.

Neelsville Middle School’s original structure was built in 1981. The facility received life safety upgrades in 2002, a cooling tower replacement in 2005, and an energy recovery unit replacement in 2008. Various mechanical and electrical upgrades along with classroom modifications and the enclosure of the cafeteria have occurred over the last few years.

The existing building is approximately 128,130 gross square feet. Presently, the school capacity is 922 students and the enrollment is 911 students in grades 6 through 8. The school site is 6,500 gross square feet and is also home to an Infants and Toddlers Program facility.

According to information provided during a tour of the under-construction frame of the building earlier this school year, “floors were in place so that the invited guests were able to ascend to the 3rd floor. After so many years enduring a building with few windows and a low profile, one of the key asks from the community was a view of the upcounty skyline from the top of Neelsville. Well, the architects delivered! Looking South, one can see the Washingtonian in Gaithersburg and beyond. Looking North, the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. It is truly an inspiring view and will be what awaits students who enter the library to study!”
