In 2019, Montgomery Blair High School in MCPS offered a groundbreaking Hip Hop History and Culture class, a first in the district. MCPS recently created a video highlighting the course, which can be seen below.

Teacher Kenneth Smith, who spearheaded the course, collaborated with a team of teachers and students, with the proposal originating in 2018. The class is now also available at Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Rockville High Schools. Smith’s efforts were recently recognized at the Montgomery County Council’s Black History Month celebration for his role in developing this unique class.

The course title, inspired by the African-American Museum of History and Culture in Washington D.C., underscores its focus on more than just music. Instead, it delves into the sociological aspects of hip hop, exploring its cultural and social impact. Originating in the Bronx in the 1970s, hip hop has evolved into a global cultural force, influencing politics, psychology, and even mental health.

The class adopts a sociological perspective to educate students about hip hop’s broader impact. Lessons combine history, sociology, and social commentary, with a focus on its influence on global culture. Students appreciate the course for its fresh perspective on American history, offering insights that go beyond traditional history classes.
