MCPS schools have recognized and celebrated black history month in recent weeks. In addition to Blair High School’s Sankofa show, students at Redland Middle School, South Lake Elementary School, and Fairland Elementary School are among the various schools MCPS has highlighted this month. See below:
Students at Redland Middle School are working on a Black History Month SSL project through their advisory class. This year’s Black History Month theme is African Americans and the Arts, so students are researching an African American artist and then completing a quilt square about their chosen person. The quilt squares will be decorated and contain information about the person’s impact on art and culture in the US. The squares will be put together to form “quilts” and will be displayed around the building.
Students at South Lake Elementary School are highlighting important people, places, events, activities, and other relevant topics of interest in a door decorating contest. On Friday, Feb. 22, parents and community members will walk around the school and vote on the winning door/bulletin board during Black History Night.
Earlier this month, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones was a guest reader at Fairland Elementary School during the school’s Black History Month recognition.
