Rachel Carson Elementary School Holds First ‘Hispanic Family Night’

On Thursday, March 7, 2024, Rachel Carson Elementary School in Gaithersburg held its first Hispanic Family Night. The purpose of the event was to build a partnership between families and the school (photos below).

Principal Mindy Reeves and a team of interpreters shared information about the school’s attendance initiatives, including attendance rates, ways attendance impacts academic achievement, and the correlation between attendance and long term student success. Families were able to share their feedback on their children’s experiences in an effort to strengthen the home-school connection.

Following the informational session, families participated in a fair where a variety of community partners and Montgomery County Public School staff offered resources.  Such resources included The City of Gaithersburg, the Latino Health Initiative, and Montgomery County Public Library to name a few. MCPS staff were on site to help with technology initiatives, and kindergarten registration.  Lakelands Park Middle School principal, Rose Alvarez, also attended the event. Families were provided free childcare from the school’s Bar-T and dinner was served to all.

The school would like to thank the following businesses for their generous donations: Cinco de Mayo, Laredo Grill, Sin and Grin, Rio Grande Bar and Grill, Mi Rancho, Isabella’s, Uncle Julio’s, Paladar, La Casita Pupuseria & Cocina, and Paisano’s. “The evening was a great success and the school is excited to continue to foster relationships with all families.” said Principal Mindy Reeves.
