Rockville Man Arrested in New Jersey After Allegedly Attempting to Collect Payment Stemming From Online Scam

On Thursday, February 28th, Sayreville Police responded to Flagstar Bank (77 Main St.) after the bank suspected that a local senior citizen was the victim of a scam. The alleged scammer was a Rockville, MD man who allegedly drove to New Jersey to collect a payment from the victim.

According to police, “the investigation revealed that the victim was using her computer and clicked on a pop-up message advising her to call a Microsoft number. Through a series of telephone calls the scammers convinced the victim that her bank account was compromised and that her assistance was vital to restore her accounts.

When the suspect arrived to Sayreville to collect a payment from the victim, he was placed under arrest. The suspect, Zhongqiang Chen age 32, from Rockville Maryland, was charged with multiple counts of Theft and Conspiracy to Commit Theft.”

Sayreville Police thanked the staff at Flagstar Bank for recognizing the suspicious circumstances.
