
Ready Montgomery has issued an Air Quality Alert due to “a large fire at a quarry in Travilah is spreading smoke across the region and may cause unhealthy levels of air quality.” Residents are advised to take precautions.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 13900blk of Piney Meetinghouse Rd, near Travilah Rd, for the report of a fire on Thursday, March 14 at approximately 11:45am (video below, by MCFRS).
According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire is located at Aggregate Industries quarry in Rockville. In an update at 12:37pm, Piringer stated that several oil tanks were on fire and that HazMat crews have also arrived. Approximately 75 firefighters are currently at the scene.
The situation is contained and there is no danger to the immediate area. We will provide an update if additional information becomes available. Per the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security:
• Limit time outdoors
• Consider closing windows and wearing a mask to limit risk to people with respiratory illnesses.
