31 years ago we were digging out from the 1993 Storm of the Century. Over 6″+ of snow fell across the Baltimore & Washington DC metros with up to 3 ft of snow in the Alleghenies (over a foot for most of Montgomery County).

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this was the second most costly winter storm to date with $5.5 billion in damages (which is $11.5 billion in 2024) across 15+ states. Sadly, the storm caused more than 270 fatalities across 13 states including 13 deaths in Virginia and three in Maryland.

The storm extended from March 11th until March 13th for various parts of the area. The two-day snow totals (Mar. 11-13) for various areas across the region, included 44 inches at Snowshow, West Virginia, 35 inches in McHenry, Maryland, 14.1 inches at Dulles Airport, a shade under a foot at BWI (11.9 inches), and 6.6 inches at National Airport.
