
Around 11:45am on Thursday, March 14, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 13900blk of Piney Meetinghouse Rd after multiple oil tanks had caught on fire at the F O Day Bituminous, Aggregate Industries quarry in Rockville.
During an evening news briefing, MCFRS officials announced that the fire had been extinguished and there were no injuries reported. Due to the nature of the fire, a foam crash truck was dispatched from Dulles Airport to aid in extinguishing the flames.
There was no immediate danger to the surrounding area during the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Montgomery County Office and Emergency Management and Homeland Security issued an air quality alert, “A large fire at a quarry in Travilah is spreading smoke across the region & may cause unhealthy levels of air quality. Residents are advised to take precautions: limit time outdoors, consider closing windows & wearing a mask to limit risk to people with respiratory illnesses.
