Just before the start of spring break, students at Rolling Terrace Elementary in Takoma Park were treated to an exciting surprise when three NASA astronauts paid a visit to their school to share their experiences in space.
According to MCPS, among the astronauts were Frank Rubio, a record-holder for the longest single duration spaceflight by an American astronaut, Sultan Al Neyadi, the first United Arab Emirates astronaut to embark on a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, and Stephen Bowen, the first and only astronaut to fly on consecutive space shuttle missions to the ISS.
During their visit, the astronauts engaged the students with fascinating insights from their time in space, addressing questions ranging from the sensation of weightlessness to the logistics of obtaining drinking water. Their enthusiasm and firsthand accounts captivated the audience, evoking smiles and expressions of wonder.
The astronauts also recounted their personal journeys to becoming astronauts, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and individualized goals. They underscored the significance of disciplines such as mathematics, science, technology, and engineering for aspiring space explorers, urging students to engage in STEM programs.
As a token of appreciation, the astronauts presented Rolling Terrace principal Isabelle Mensah with framed photos from their missions and an American flag that had traveled to space. These mementos will be proudly displayed at the school, serving as constant reminders to all students to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
