Kennedy High School Students Create PSA to Address Chronic Absenteeism

As part of Kennedy High School’s efforts to address chronic absenteeism, the school’s TV production group created a PSA about the importance of attendance. The PSA can be seen in full below.

Kennedy is the only school in the county that produces two 15-minute shows a week. Per Broadcast Journalism & Communications Academy Lead Teacher Deborah Wischmann, “The group recently attend took home two awards in the Broadcast Excellence category at the Student Television Network Convention in sunny Long Beach, CA. They earned the ‘Broadcast Excellence Outstanding Achievement in Daily Live News Show’ and ‘Broadcast Excellence Outstanding Achievement in News Magazine.’

“The competition was fierce as we were up against over 165 schools across the country including Hawaii and Alaska. Without your support, this could not have happened. The videos we won were the live show with Ms. Garay and The Sword, featuring Ms. McKnight and Winter City Lights.” Wischmann said. “We will be putting together a package regarding our adventures in CA. The next stop is the Emmys in June.”

Kassie Cardona, Pupil Personnel Worker at the school, asked the TV production group to put together a PSA to address chronic absenteeism after MCPS recently released its attendance plan called ‘All Together Now: In Schools Together, Learn Together, Achieve Together.‘ The full video can be seen below:
