Rockville Police Warn Residents After Multiple Thefts From Vehicles Overnight

The Rockville City Police Department has shared via social media that it is responding to multiple calls related to thefts from vehicles from overnight (Friday into Saturday).

Per Rockville Police, “Please ensure to follow these safety tips to keep your property safe and if you observe suspicious activity, report it to the RCPD at 240-314-8900. We’ve observed a spree of forced-entry thefts from vehicles. Protect your property:

  • Park in a well-lit, visible area
  • Bring valuables with you when leaving your car
  • Keep valuables out of view”

In January, RCPD made an official request to the Hyundai Motor Company to provide the department with steering wheel locks for city residents to help prevent cars being stolen. Last month (March), Rockville Police gave out the free steering wheel locks to Rockville residents while supplies lasted. The locks can be used with all vehicle makes and models.

“Hyundai and Kia models have accounted for 74% of all vehicle thefts reported in the City of Rockville since January. Rockville experienced a 68% increase in vehicle thefts from 2022 to 2023, mirroring a trend impacting nearly every jurisdiction in the country.

Last month Rockville Police stated that “the lock giveaway is the latest step taken by the RCPD to stop vehicle thefts, including increasing proactive patrols and publicizing tips for preventing vehicle thefts.”
