Active U, a non-profit organization and club created by John F. Kennedy High School students Laís Manoel, Kemuella Bukuru Okenkali, Jazmaenia Lacount, Jillian Cook and Keren Butuyi Okenkali, aims to provide feminine hygiene products to young ladies who cannot afford them through “Project Wellness.”
“The club part of our organization is based on teaching young girls at our school about feminine hygiene. We meet every Wednesday to talk about things like birth control, menstruation cycles, hygiene habits and many more.” Active U tells us.
“On the non-profit side, we strive to help girls who are not financially stable to receive products for free. Right now we are working on providing pads and tampons in each dispenser at the girls bathroom (they’ve never been filled) and we plan on bringing more bags that we’ve created.”
Active U shares that 77% of Kennedy students are economically disadvantaged, and the group plans to “help the girls of our community have access to basic daily products.” The bags they’ve created to giveaway include items such as pads, tampons, toothpaste, tooth brushes, perfumes, and more.
They hope to expand the club to other Down County Consortium schools. “We also plan on having a teen girl summit where we can get adults to give young girls advice on womanly lifehood. Kennedy has had a bad reputation for years and has many problems, but little by little we plan on helping to make a change within the environment.”
Currently, Project Wellness is open to donations and funding.
