The Rockville City Police Department gave away all steering wheel lock inventory at its event on Saturday- the second time this has happened in two events (first occurred earlier this year in March).

The Steering wheel locks were only made available to residents whose cars are registered in the City of Rockville and residents had to produce a registration card to verify their vehicle is registered in the City of Rockville. According to Rockville Police, residents lined up ahead of the event, which started at 9am on Saturday.
Per a recent city of Rockville news release:In January, RCPD made an official request to the Hyundai Motor Company to provide the department with steering wheel locks for city residents.

Hyundai and Kia models have accounted for 74% of all vehicle thefts reported in the City of Rockville since January. Rockville experienced a 68% increase in vehicle thefts from 2022 to 2023, mirroring a trend impacting nearly every jurisdiction in the country.

The lock giveaway is the latest step taken by the RCPD to stop vehicle thefts, including increasing proactive patrols and publicizing tips for preventing vehicle thefts.”
