
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 100 block of Duvall Lane in Gaithersburg for what was dispatched as an auto fire, but turned out to be a skateboard fire.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, firefighters found a lithium-ion skate board on fire in the living room of the home. The skateboard was removed from the house and there was no extension. Hazmat is assisting to handle the damaged lithium-ion battery.
Montgomery County Fire officials have previously warned of the dangers that come with electric scooter, bikes, and more, and have offered the following tips to help prevent any future fires:
- Only use and purchase products that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
- Always follow manufacturer’s instructions
- Avoid over-charging batteries
- Don’t leave e-bikes/e-scooters charging overnight
- Only use the charging cord that came with the device. Don’t use off-brand products.
- Keep batteries and devises at room temperature. Do not place in direct sunlight.
- Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire.
