MCPS recently shared the news of Gaithersburg High School hosted a Special Education Prom on May 17. More than 100 students from Watkins Mill, Albert Einstein and Wheaton joined Gaithersburg students in the school café for a catered event, complete with a DJ and dancing.

The annual event also welcomed paraeducators and parents, along with a “Trojan Royalty” court. The prom was sponsored by the school’s Student Government Association and was supported by photography and cosmetology classes.

SGA sponsor Nilda Keres told us last year that the event was founded in 2018 when the school noticed that many students with special needs weren’t attending general prom. “This was a chance to have a prom where students can just be themselves.” Keres said

“This is my favorite time of year and event to plan. The students have such a great time and that’s what this is all about.” Keres has previously told us. Last year, Keres told us Watkins Mill High School was invited and that the goal was for the event to continue to grow. This year, students from Einstein and Wheaton high schools joined Gaithersburg at the event.
