Nim Ali, an upcoming restaurant offering “traditional Guatemalan street food flavors, including the 12″ Shuko Chingon made with beef, ham, bacon, al pastor, steak, chorizo, cilantro aioli, and spicy picamas, as well as other snacks and plates”, is coming soon to Commas Food Hall in Silver Spring (according to a report by Source of the Spring).

Source of the Spring reports that Nim Ali will join the previously announced Tokoa Cheesesteaks, DMV Empanadas, and J&J Mex-Taqueria at Commas Food Hall in Ellsworth Place mall. Chef Karla Alonzo is the driving force behind the restaurant. More can be read about her below, courtesy of Restaurants by Nim Ali:

“Karla Alonzo stands as a beacon of Guatemalan culinary excellence in the heart of Washington DC. As the mastermind behind Nim Ali Shukos and Maltiox, she has carved a niche for herself in the vibrant culinary scene of the nation’s capital. From humble beginnings to becoming a celebrated chef and restaurateur, Karla’s journey is as savory and rich as the dishes she creates.

Born and raised in Guatemala, Karla’s passion for cooking ignited at a young age as she observed her mother effortlessly whip up traditional Guatemalan dishes in their cozy kitchen. Surrounded by the aromas of spices and the sizzle of the stove, she found herself enamored by the magic of culinary artistry. These early experiences laid the foundation for her future endeavors. After the loss of her mother while working in the United States, Karla started her first restaurant pop-up, Nim Ali which translates to “big lady” in K’iche, a Mayan language of Guatemala. Not big in size – but rather a fearless, intelligent and trailblazing woman.

Karla’s second adventure and most recent culinary empire expanded with the opening of Maltiox, a cozy eatery that pays homage to the diverse culinary heritage of Guatemalas traditional entrees. At Maltiox, patrons are treated to a gastronomic journey through Guatemala’s rich tapestry of flavors, from the smoky notes of pepián to the delicate sweetness of rellenitos. With its warm ambiance and soul-satisfying dishes, Maltiox is growing its reputation to become a beloved culinary destination in Washington DC.

For Karla, cooking is more than just a profession–it’s a way of preserving culture, fostering connections, and spreading joy. She believes in using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that not only tantalize the taste buds but also nourish the soul. Through her culinary creations, Karla hopes to introduce diners to the vibrant and diverse flavors of Guatemala while celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures that make up the Washington DC community.
