Near-Record Heat on the Way for the DMV

We were able to enjoy low humidity and below normal temperatures through Wednesday, but near-record heat returns Thursday and Friday and all of next week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Temps will likely surge into the low to mid 90s Thursday & Friday with heat index values above 100 degrees. A slight cooldown is expected this weekend before the heat returns in a major way next week.

Today, Thursday, high pressure pulls away from the coast, and a return to southerly winds will yield much warmer weather. Highs should rise into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees in spots, accompanied by some isolated showers. Severe weather chances increase by Friday.

All of next week high temps in the 90s with a heat index of over 100° possible. FOX5’s Mike Thomas wrote that “Many even show the risk for 100°F+ weather, which DC has not seen since August of 2016” and “For DC, likely to be our most prolonged heat wave since 2022.”
