New MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor to Start With $360K Salary

New Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor started with the school district on July 1st. MCPS has since released the terms of his contract, and it comes with an annual salary that starts at $360,000

The annual salary on the contract starts at $40K higher than previous superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight’s salary, which started at $320K annually in 2022. Jack Smith started at $275K in 2916, while Josh Starr started with a $250K salary in 2011 ($32K more than Jerry Weast finished with).

The contract, which runs until June 30th, 2028, “shall be increased by a percentage equal to any increase given to the members of the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (“MCAAP”) at the same time of such increases; however, no such increase to the Superintendent’s annual salary shall go into effect during the 2024-2025 contract year. Additionaly, the Superintendent’s salary may be reviewed on an annual basis, at the tine of the Superintendent’s evaluation by the Board, to determine whether any additional increase is appropriate.”

The contract comes with 30 days of annual leave each year, as well as 15 days of sick/personal leave. Unused annual and sick/personal leave can carry over year to year. 50% of accrued, but unused annual leave will be cashed in each year.

Dr. Taylor will receive an MCPS-owned vehicle (approved by the Board) for school district purposes during the term of the contract. The Superintendent’s expenses for gasoline, insurance, maintenance, and repairs in connection with the use of said vehicle, will be paid by the Board of Education.
