Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 600 block of Westside Drive in Gaithersburg’s Brighton Village neighborhood at approximately 4:20am Sunday morning.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, multiple units responded to what was reported as a kitchen fire with entrapment. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fire in the kitchen, located on the first floor. Three people were trapped on the deck and all were rescued via ladders. All three people were not injured, however, one cat did not survive the fire.
In an update by Assistant Chief David Pazos, the residents of this morning’s fire were awakened by their cat while they slept in bed. When awoken, residents realized a fire below them on the first floor and closed the door before moving to their second floor balcony where they were rescued by firefighters. The cat did not survive.
