San Alejo, a Salvadoran restaurant with its first location in Hyattsville, will be expanding to include a Montgomery County location at 7643 New Hampshire Ave in Takoma Park. The restaurant will be taking over the space that was previously home to No. 1 China in Takoma Langley Crossroads.
San Alejo is described as bustling and informal as the dining rooms in the markets of El Salvador: places where tradition, culture and the identity of a working people come together. The first location opened in 2016 at 1819 East-West Hwy in Hyattsville. An opening date for the Takoma Park location is not yet available. The full menu can be seen below.
Per San Alejo: “A Salvadoran family that seeks to recreate homemade food from the fields of our country: our ancestral cuisine that is passed down from generation to generation. We use unique spices and ingredients to create authentic, high-quality food. Many of them are imported directly from El Salvador, such as morro, loroco, cashew, silk beans and dairy products.
95% of our workers are women. This was, is and will continue to be our greatest social mission: supporting single mothers who give their best to prepare delicious dishes, while running their homes with effort and love. We are proud to have you as part of our team. Furthermore, since our beginnings we have worked closely with the community. We regularly fund activities in schools, churches, community clinics and sports teams. We also provide open cooking classes, free of charge, for organizations focused on healthy food for diabetics. Thank you very much for the opportunity to share our most beloved food with your family. By choosing us, you become part of ours.”
