The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony on Sunday evening. After 15 days, the United States secured 40 gold medals and a total of 126 medals across the various events. While California led the way for the U.S. with 50 medals, Maryland had seven athletes win ten total medals (per the Washington Post).
Maryland Governor Wes Moore proudly shared the following via social media, “TeamUSA Marylanders will bring home 11 medals from the Olympics! If we were a country, we’d be tied with Kenya and Sweden for the 19th slot in total medals won!” The discrepancy in medals could be because some athletes are native Marylanders while others currently live in the state now.
Moore went on to say, “I also want to give a special shoutout to @umterps’s Alyssa Thomas and Thea LaFond for both winning gold! Thea is the first athlete from Dominica to win an Olympic medal for her country – an incredible and historic achievement.
I am so proud of all our TeamUSA athletes, especially those representing Maryland! Whether you brought home a medal or not, you’ve made us incredibly proud. Let’s keep the momentum going for the Paralympics!”
