District 14 Delegation Hosted School Supply and Backpack Giveaway at Two MCPS Elementary Schools Ahead of the First Day of School

The District 14 Delegation, comprising Delegate Bernice Mireku-North, Delegate Pam Queen, Delegate Anne Kaiser, and Senator Craig Zucker, hosted a school supply and backpack giveaway at Fairland Elementary School on August 22, 2024 and Greencastle Elementary School on August 23, 2024. More than 200 backpacks, pencils, and erasers were given out at each school.

Fairland and Greencastle are two of the thirty-four designated community schools in Montgomery County, which focus on providing additional support and resources to students and families in need.

“It’s exciting to see how community schools like Fairland and Greencastle Elementary thrive thanks to Maryland’s strong commitment to implementing the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future,” said Senator Zucker, Delegate Mireku-North, Delegate Queen, and Delegate Kaiser.

“This giveaway is our way of showing the school staff, students, and parents that we are in this together and dedicated to ensuring our children succeed in Montgomery County Public Schools. It also provided an opportunity to better understand the specific challenges facing working families in District 14.”

Community Schools in Maryland are schools that receive a Concentration of Poverty Grant, which provides both initial funding and ongoing per-pupil funding to support various programs.

These grants enable schools to implement and sustain initiatives that promote equity and address the physical, mental, academic, and extracurricular needs of students, ensuring a supportive learning environment.

This year marked the first District 14 Team school supply and backpack giveaway to support designated community schools as students start the academic school year.
