“Wheaton Passport to Sports” Event Takes Place on September 8

Montgomery Parks is hosting a day of fun and fitness at the Wheaton Passport to Sports event at Wheaton Regional Park on September 8, 2024 from 11am-3pm. Coaches will be on hand to give pointers as participants try various fitness activities at the park, including pickleball, tennis, ice skating, ice hockey and field sports.

 The Wheaton Passport to Sports event takes place at Wheaton Regional Park (11717 Orebaugh Ave.) for children ages 3 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a passport must be purchased for $10 on ActiveMontgomery  with advanced registration required.

 The day of the event, participants checkin at the Wheaton Ice Arena or Wheaton Indoor Tennis to receive a wristband and passport to enjoy various activities and enter a raffle for prizes, including free ice skating or tennis lessons. Wheaton Passport to Sports Day is a terrific way for people of all ages and skill levels to try activities at our indoor sports facilities,” said Christy Turnbull, Division Chief overseeing Montgomery Parks’ sports facilities. Each location will have coaches and staff to introduce participants to racquet, ice, and field sports.  It is a chance to try something new and check out the amenities of our indoor facilities in Wheaton Regional Park. Schedule of events:

Wheaton Ice Arena 

  • 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Public Skating 

  • 1:00-1:15 pm: See the Zamboni in action resurfacing the ice. 

  • 1:15-2:45 pm: Beginner skating instruction and a variety of ice stations to try ice hockey, figure skating, and speedskating 

  • 2:45-3:00 pm: See the Zamboni in action resurfacing the ice. 

  • 11:00 a.m3:00 p.m.: Skate shop and snack bar open; Information tables on programs at the rink including our local ice sports clubs. 

Wheaton Sports Pavilion 

  • 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.: Bubble soccer, additional sport stations on the field

Wheaton Indoor Tennis 

  • 11:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m.: Open courts to try pickleball and tennis. Paddles, racquets and balls will be available. Coaches will be on hand to offer tips to get started.  Please wear athletic shoes. 

  • 1:00-2:00 p.m.: Tennis instruction including: 

  • Tennis 101 teaches the basics of playing tennis with our coaching staff. Please wear athletic shoes and racquets will be provided. 

  • Cardio Tennis is for adults and is a series of games to music designed to get you moving. Level 1 is for beginner players who can move and hit while level 2 is for intermediate players who can sustain rallies, volley, and cover the court.
