Each month our very own Mr. MoCo releases his favorite dish to eat and in August he went with a breakfast sandwich from the only Maryland restaurant included in the Washington Post’s “10 Best Breakfast Sandwiches in the DC Area” list. While WaPo mentioned the Bistek, Mr. MoCo went with a different sandwich from Lapu Lapu.
Lapu Lapu, located at 216 Market Street W. in Gaithersburg, is the sister restaurant of popular Rockville restaurant Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly. The Filipino breakfast sandwich spot opened in June 2022 and has since become a hit locally with favorites like the chorizo, spam, corned beef, bacon egg & cheese, B.A.L.T., and of course the Bistek (Thin Sliced Lemon Soy Ribeye, Fried Egg, Pickled Onions, White American Cheese Sauce, Lettuce, Garlic Adobo Mayo).
Though the Bistek has been getting a lot of attention lately, it was the Spam breakfast sandwich that earned the accolades this time around. The ingredients include “Spam, Soft Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Gouda Cheese, Arugula, Lapu Lapu Sauce.” Mr. MoCo stated “I know that spam sometime scares people away, but this is one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. I’ve ordered it two times in the last two weeks.”

In 2021, Yelp’s “Top Breakfast Sandwiches in Each State” featured the breakfast sandwich at Sunday Morning Bakehouse in Pike & Rose, which consists of crispy thick-cut bacon, soft scrambled eggs, Swiss cheese, house aioli on a toasted brioche bun. “Both of these are up there as the best I’ve had” Mr. MoCo said.
