Gaithersburg Artist’s Exhibit Addresses Mental Health and Wellness Through Art

The City of Gaithersburg is presenting “Pull Up A Chair 2.0,” a special exhibition at the Arts Barn. The exhibit is aimed at addressing mental health and wellness through art and will be on display through October 6, 2024.

A Panel Discussion will be held on Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m. to discuss art and mental health. In addition, there will be a Meet the Artists Reception on Sunday, September 15 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend the free reception, and light refreshments will be served.

“Pull Up A Chair, 2.0” is described as a powerful initiative that was curated by Gaithersburg artist Sandra Davis. It seeks to move beyond the mere act of sitting down by encouraging dialogue and connection among individuals. By transforming chairs into symbols of conversation starters, the exhibition sheds light on the realities of mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, grief, and addiction. The questions posed by the exhibition are challenging and thought-provoking, touching on topics like access to resources, the responsible distribution of medication, and the importance of speaking out about mental health issues. Through the creative expression of 14 local artists, each using chairs as their canvas.

The exhibition offers raw and honest perspectives that demand attention and engagement. It emphasizes the need for active participation in the conversation surrounding mental health rather than passive observation. “Pull Up A Chair 2.0” serves as a platform for raising awareness, fostering understanding, and encouraging action in the realm of mental health and wellness. The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) provided a grant for this touring exhibition.
