Maryland’s First Ukrainian Restaurant is Now Open

Back in May we let you know that Ruta Ukrainian Restaurant was coming to 4862 Cordell Ave in Bethesda, the former site of Momo Chicken. The restaurant opened last month and our very own Mr. MoCo recently stopped by to support the restaurant (video below).

Upon entering, signs will let you know that Ruta is Maryland’s first Ukrainian restaurant. Ruta was also the first Ukrainian restaurant in DC, with its first location at 327 7th St in SE. Menu items include Varenyky (Ukrainian dumplings), Chicken Kyiv, Meat Holubtsi (meat stuffed cabbage with sour cream), and much more. The caption in the video below will name the items shown.

According to its website, ““Ruta” is not just a beautifully sounding word, it’s also a wonderful flower from ancient Ukrainian myths and legends. The legends and tales of the Carpathians tell that the real “Red Ruta” is a yellow flower, and only on a magical night of Ivana Kupala it turns flaming red for just a few minutes. The legend also says that the lucky one who finds the flower and plucks it during those few minutes will find true love. We hope our “Ruta” becomes your true love”
