10-Day Winter Break Being Considered For 2025/2026 School Year

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is considering a possible 10-day winter break for the 2025-2026 school year, as outlined in one of two draft calendars presented on Tuesday during a meeting of the Board of Education’s policy management committee by Dana Edwards and Catherine Malchodi (photos of both drafts below).


According to the presentation, the options want to balance instructional focus with operational impacts, keep the first day of school for students before Labor Day, extend winter break, and enhance the accessibility of the monthly calendar template.

The key features for version 1 include a “Transition Day for Students” on Monday, August 25, 2024 with the first day of school for students on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Winter Break would be from December 22, 2025- January 2, 2026. Spring Break would go from March 30, 2026 – April 6, 2026, and the last day of school for students would be Thursday, June 18, 2026.

The key features for version 2 include a “Transition Day for Students” on Monday, August 25, 2024 with the first day of school for students on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Winter Break would be from December 24, 2025- January 2, 2026. Spring Break would go from March 30, 2026 – April 6, 2026, and the last day of school for students would be Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
