The City of Takoma Park Police Department has announced the implementation of a Red-Light Camera Enforcement Program for what the department describes as an effort to enhance traffic safety and reduce the risk of accidents caused by red-light violations. “This initiative aims to deter dangerous driving behavior, improve compliance with traffic signals, and ultimately save lives.”

According to Takoma Park Police, “Starting on or about September 23, 2024, the first red-light cameras at the below intersections will begin issuing warning notices to drivers who fail to stop at red lights. • Eastbound Philadelphia Avenue at Piney Branch Road
  • Northbound Piney Branch Road at Philadelphia Avenue
  • Southbound Piney Branch Road at Philadelphia Avenue

Additional red-light cameras will be activated at the following locations starting on or about September 30, 2024, also issuing warning notices for 30 days. Locations effective September 30, 2024:

  • The fine for an automated red-light violation is $75.
  • Fines may increase up to $100 if court-imposed costs are added when contesting citations.
  • No points will be added to a driver’s license, as these are civil violations.
  • Vehicle insurance providers will notbe notified of red-light camera citations.

This program is part of a broader effort to improve traffic safety and encourage compliance with traffic laws. We urge drivers to remain vigilant and obey all traffic signals to avoid violations and, more importantly, prevent accidents.
