Costco is Rolling Out “Member Access Scanners”

This past summer, Costco noted that in the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse. They are being rolled out in the DMV area and are likely to be at your location in the near future.

Upon arrival, members will be greeted by a sign that states, “To Expedite the entry process, Please Have your Membership card / Digital card Ready for Scanning prior to attempting to enter.” The new member access scanners will verify the face on the person to the face on the screen, so pictures are necessary. “If the Face on the Screen does not match the Face on the person, we will encourage you to sign up for your own account today.”

Memberships are Non-Transferable and guests must be accompanied by the member. “Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner*. Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry. If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!”

Costco notes that, “If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop. Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID. We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.” Photo courtesy Google Maps
