Travilah Elementary School, located at 13801 Dufief Mill Rd., opened in 1960 in what is now known as North Potomac. It is named for Travilah Clagett, who was the first postmaster for the area, leading to the United States Post Office using the name “Travilah’ to identify the previously unnamed location. The school has the following history on its website:
The school’s website noted that Travilah takes its name from Travilah Road and the historic farming community that once thrived there. By the late 1800s, the town center at the crossroads of Travilah and Glen Roads had a post office, blacksmith shop, stores, and a school.
The original Travilah School, built in 1886, was a modest one-room building. After closing in 1943, a new Travilah Elementary opened in its current location in 1960 on land that was part of Hanson Farm. Expanded over the years, the school underwent significant modernization in 1991 and 2008, including new classrooms, technology, and facilities like a courtyard and learning pond.
