Halloweentown Star Kimberly J. Brown Remembers Her Maryland Roots

Halloweentown has become a cherished Halloween staple for families since its debut in 1998. With its whimsical portrayal of a magical world filled with witches and goblins, the film captivates audiences each year as they revisit Marnie Piper’s enchanting journey. Kimberly J. Brown, widely recognized for her role as the teen witch Marnie Piper in the Halloweentown films, is from right here in Gaithersburg.

In a 2016 interview with a Maryland-based blog, she reminisced about her childhood in Gaithersburg during the 80s and early 90s. “There were certain areas near where I lived that were so serene. I love that whole country, green feel. Our family ritual was going to duck ponds in the area and playing with the baby chicks. I enjoyed having a bat and a ball, without worrying about where the ball lands, if that makes sense. In Los Angeles, you don’t have that luxury all the time.” She also mentioned in the interview that Washington is her favorite NFL team.

Brown’s career took off when she landed the role of Marah Lewis on the daytime soap opera Guiding Light, where she played the daughter of the iconic couple Josh Lewis and Reva Shayne. At just 13 years old, she was cast as Marnie Piper in Halloweentown, a young witch eager to learn magic from her grandmother, Aggie, portrayed by Debbie Reynolds. Halloweentown premiered on October 17, 1998, and was met with positive reception, prompting Disney Channel to create three sequels. Brown reprised her role as Marnie in the first two sequels, but was replaced by Sara Paxton in the fourth installment, Return to Halloweentown, a change that left Brown feeling confused and disappointed.

In 2021, Brown made her return to daytime television by joining the cast of General Hospital. Alongside a friend, she operates an Etsy shop called CraftilyCreative, which features a range of products, including Halloweentown-themed merchandise. Brown is now married to her Halloweentown II co-star, Daniel Kountz. The Halloweentown films continue to be a beloved part of the October Halloween movie lineup for new generations.
