Improperly Disposed Ashes Spark $15K Deck Fire

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a deck fire in the 5600blk of Silo Hill Court in Derwood on Tuesday, November 5.

According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, a neighbor spotted smoke and called 911. The house was unoccupied at the time, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames on the deck. The fire was caused by “cool” fireplace ashes from the previous night, which had been placed in a paper bag on the deck earlier that day.

Damage is estimated at around $15,000, and no injuries were reported.
