Good Fortune Cafe, which has been serving the area since 1994 (according to its website), closed in August at 237 Kentlands Place. At the time an employee shared that they would be returning later in the year in the space that has been home to Happy Uncle in Germantown’s Clopper’s Mill shopping center (18022 Mateny Rd.) for more than 20 years. Today, it was confirmed by Happy Uncle that Good Fortune would be taking over early next year.
A representative from Happy Uncle let us know that Good Fortune Cafe would be taking over early next year, stating “Maybe January 1st” as a potential timeframe for the changeover. While many have been wondering and will be happy to hear about Good Fortune’s return, Happy Uncle has also been a very popular restaurant for the Germantown community.
Good Foetune Cafe was located in the Beacon Place shopping center (same strip as Giant) and initially had a bigger space before downsizing to the most recent space in the early 2000s. 237 Kentlands Blvd. will be taken over by Bangkok Garden, which is looking to put in a new concept in the space.
Good Fortune started out with a broad menu, according to a Washington Post article from 2002. “Lots of familiar dishes of the General Tso and moo shi varieties, a few softball-dad specials (a handful of “Revolution Diet” offerings, steamed and presumably low-carb), and an accommodating mix of Americanized and more authentic noodle dishes, from chow meins to chow foons, that are clearly big favorites with children.” Though there were changes, much of the menu remained intact until August 2024 when the restaurant closed.
