Man Sentenced to 21 Years for Assaulting Officers

A Gaithersburg man was sentenced to 21 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple assault charges, including assaulting two officers, following a 2023 incident.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable John Maloney has sentenced defendant, Jermaine Palmer, 36 of Gaithersburg, to 38 years in prison, suspending all but 21 years to serve. The sentencing hearing was held on November 6, 2024.

On August 5, 2024, Palmer was found guilty on charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault on law enforcement, second-degree assault, resisting arrest, and possession of CDS (not cannabis). The charges were filed following an incident on June 30, 2023, in the 7900 block of Spiceberry Circle in Gaithersburg. Montgomery County Police officers responded for a report of a person spraying a fire extinguisher in the hallway of an apartment building. As one of the officers approached Palmer, the defendant punched him in the face, causing the officer to fall back and hit his head on pavement, leaving him unconscious. The officer was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Palmer ran toward the Flower Hills Shopping center where he then assaulted another officer as police worked to take him into custody inside of a fast-food restaurant.

Assistant State’s Attorney Teresa Casafranca prosecuted this case.”
