A 20-year-old woman was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the fentanyl-related death of 19-year-old Daniel Pineda-Romero, whom she assisted in obtaining pills prior to his death.
According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Harry Storm, defendant, Evelin Cabrera, 20, of unknown address, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the death of 19-year-old Daniel Pineda-Romero. The plea hearing was held Thursday, October 31, 2024, and Judge Storm sentenced Cabrera to ten years in prison suspend all but four years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release.
On December 10, 2022, a family member discovered the victim, Daniel Pineda-Romero unresponsive inside of the family home in Gaithersburg. First responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Pineda-Romero deceased. Toxicology results were positive for fentanyl intoxication.
Following an investigation, Montgomery County Police arrested Evelin Cabrera. Cell phone records showed messages between the defendant and victim coordinating a location in Silver Spring for the victim to purchase pills in the hours before his death.
Assistant State’s Attorney Kimberly Cissel with the Overdose Prosecution Unit handled the prosecution of this case.
The victim’s mother provided the following statement: “Daniel was an amazing son that unfortunately took the wrong path to obtain painkillers. He trusted the wrong person which led to his death. He was an amazing brother, son, and friend.”
