Marriott Set to Lay Off More Than 800 Employees at Corporate Headquarters

Marriott International Inc. is set to lay off over 800 employees at its corporate headquarters, according to a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) submitted to the state of Maryland on Thursday, November 14th.

The WARN notice submitted by Bethesda-based Marriott details a “mass layoff” affecting 833 workers at its headquarters located at 7750 Wisconsin Ave. The notice indicated the layoffs will take effect on January 3.

According to a BizJournals, “Late Thursday, citing sources, Skift reported Marriott had notified employees that layoffs are coming and started offering early retirement to some workers. The cuts are expected to hit largely on the corporate side, not in the hotels themselves.”

As the world’s largest hotelier and the biggest private sector employer in Montgomery County, Marriott International moved into its new 785,000-square-foot, 22-story global corporate headquarters in the summer of 2022. In March 2022, the adjacent 245-room, 12-story Marriott Bethesda Downtown at Marriott HQ Hotel opened as the company’s 8,000th location.
