Former MCPS Middle School Teacher Sentenced to 12 Months for Sex Offense Charges

Melissa Curtis, 32, of Upper Marlboro, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, suspending all but 12 months, and five years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense for abusing a 14-year-old student while teaching at Montgomery Village Middle School in 2015.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. “Once released, Curtis will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. On June 20, 2024, Curtis pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense.

The charges stem from a period in 2015 when Curtis was working as a teacher in a public middle school in Montgomery County. The 14-year-old victim volunteered for an after-school program that Curtis was running and they were often alone together. The victim disclosed the abuse in 2023 and Curtis was charged following an investigation by the Montgomery County Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID). Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Lazzaro prosecuted this matter.”

Per a FOX5 report, “The alleged abuse happened inside a school, in Curtis’ vehicle, and at various residences in Montgomery County between January and May 2015 while the victim was 14 years old, and she was 22 years old, according to police documents. The documents also say Curtis provided the victim with alcohol and marijuana and that she had sexual intercourse with him more than 20 times when he was in eighth grade.”
