Animal Shelter Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Pet Owners

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) is warning the public of fraudulent calls requesting money for pet reunions or care, urging residents to verify communications directly and report scams to authorities.

Per MCASAC: “It has come to our attention that individuals are impersonating staff from our shelter in an attempt to solicit money for “injured pets” over the phone.

Please be advised:

Our shelter will NEVER request money over the phone in order to reunite a pet or provide lifesaving care, and we will never use Venmo or any other personal payment applications to complete financial transactions.

If you receive a call from 240-773-5900, claiming to be from the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services requesting money, please know that this is a scam. This number is a dial-in line only and is not used for outgoing calls.

To verify any legitimate communications from us, please contact us directly through our main number or email.

If you suspect you have recieved a phone call that is part of this scam, do not provide any personal or financial information. Report the incident to local authorities immediately.
