Regal Officially Closes After 20+ Years; Community Reacts

Last week we let you know that Regal Germantown (20000 Century Blvd) would be closing permanently on December 1st. The location is now closed and has been removed from the Regal website, but the community had plenty to say as they recalled their experiences over the last 20+ years at the theater.

This past summer we let you know that Realty Income Corporation is looking to sell its 7-acre property at 20000 Century Blvd in Germantown. The 68,318SF building that was home to Regal is also available individually– “20000 Century Boulevard is a 68,318 SF freestanding retail building located in Germantown Town Center that boasts an incredible 587 dedicated surface parking spaces. The site currently used as a movie theater and consists of 14 auditoriums with 2786 seats.”

We confirmed over the weekend with Michael Zacharia of CBRE that the property has not been sold yet, so there are no immediate plans for what’s coming next. Below you’ll see just some comments from readers on Regal Germantown’s closure:

• Sad. There was a showing of Plan 9 From Outer Space here (part of a Rifftrax Live event) and Conrad Brooks showed up to sign autographs.

• We will miss it. It felt like the classic movie theater I grew up with.

• Good riddance, old, never modernized like AMC Rio was, old warn out carpets, hard seats. And just a bad location

• My go to. I can’t tolerate the theatres buried in shopping centers and find it too uncomfortable to pay attention to the show when food is served. Sad at this loss. Sad for the employees.

• The sign of a fading community.

• I think Covid hurt them badly, plus the place needed updating, plus they would only list one (maybe two) of the movies on the marquee. I’m sorry to see it go, but not entirely surprised.

• Oh my heavens! Not that I went to a lot of movies, but this one certainly had lots of parking.

• As old as the theatre is, I’ve enjoyed it. Smaller crowds so you don’t have to deal with obnoxious people. A Regal Unlimited Pass and going a couple times a week was my past time for the last couple of years. I also always appreciated that they had a good collection of foreign language films and other indie films at times. Will miss this location.

• Bummer. That’s been my goto theater for a couple of decades, saw every recent Star Wars movie there on opening night, going back to Revenge of the Sith, plus many other, including the latest Indiana Jones movie.

• I mean it’s been neglected for years and people aren’t going to the movies like they used to. It makes business sense.

• Hope AMC or someone will acquire it and update it. Love this location.

• Disappointing, but it was in desperate need of modernization. Hopefully a new owner will sink some money into it and make some much-needed improvements!

• Germantown needs a movie theater and we have enough people to support it if you include Clarksburg. Make it awesome and affordable and people will come!

• Bummer but surprised it lasted this long. I honestly thought they must have been a front for laundering money, it’s always been so empty to me- back in like 2015 Star Wars The Force Awakens opened, every other theater was sold out but Germantown had plenty of seats available lol

• We used to go there all the time. It was state of the art when it was built. What a shame.
