Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call for a fire that occurred overnight in the area of Darnestown Rd and White’s Ferry Rd.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire occurred at a home between Darnestown and Poolesville. Neighbors reported heavy smoke coming from the house around midnight and firefighters were met with heavy fire conditions upon arrival.
Neighbors reported that someone was still in the house. Firefighters were able to rescue a dog and were challenged by “excessive storage conditions” before knocking down the fire and locating a body on the second floor of the home.
Per Piringer, this is the fourth fatal fire of the year in Montgomery County. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The roads in the area were closed for a few hours while firefighters were engaged in putting out the fire and have since iced up due to the water used to put out the fire and temperatures being in the teens.
As of 6:45am, the icy road surface has been treated, but lanes are narrow. Two-way traffic gets by slowly on Route 28/Darnestown Rd, but White’s Ferry Road remains closed between Rt28 and Sugarland Rd. Photo courtesy MCFRS.
