Jersey Mike’s was originally founded as Mike’s Submarines in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, in 1956. Peter Cancro began working at the restaurant in 1968 at age 14, when it was on its third owner. Three years later, the shop went up for sale again, and with the help of his high school football coach, who was also a banker, Cancro secured $125,000 to purchase it at just 17 years old. He began franchising the restaurant in 1987, and it has since grown to over 2,000 locations. Last month, Jersey Mike’s announced an agreement to be acquired by Blackstone for approximately $8 billion, with Founder and CEO Peter Cancro retaining a significant equity stake and continuing to lead the business.
