Clarksburg Man Sentenced to 12 Months and Lifetime Sex Offender Registration for Graduation Party Assault

A Clarksburg man was sentenced to 12 months in prison and lifetime sex offender registration after being convicted of a third-degree sex offense for groping a woman during a 2021 college graduation event.

According to the Montgomey County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Jeannie Cho sentenced defendant Nelson Jones, 27, of Clarksburg, to ten years in prison suspending all but 12 months to serve. The judge ordered that he complete five years of probation upon release with multiple conditions including supervision by COMET (Collaborative Offender Management/Enforced Treatment). Jones will be required to register as a sex offender for life. The sentencing hearing was held Friday December 20, 2024.

This stems from an incident on May 15, 2021. Jones attended a college graduation celebration at the home of a family friend. The celebration continued into early morning hours, and a woman attending the gathering went into a bedroom alone to sleep. Jones entered the bedroom and sexually assaulted the woman. She awoke to him touching her. The jury found Jones guilty of groping the victim’s breasts underneath her shirt. The case was originally tried in February 2023 but resulted with a hung jury.
