Since its opening in 2019, Pumpernickel & Rye in Urbana has established itself as a must-visit destination for deli lovers in Frederick County. The innovative deli offers a fresh take on classic favorites, featuring house-made pastrami, roast beef brisket, and smoked turkey, and now it’s operated by Montgomery County’s Jonny Allen, who is the founder of Pizza CS and CSNY Pizza (1020 Rockville Pike).
Pumpernickel & Rye was founded by sisters Amy Nesbit and Megan Hook. Nesbit moved to Los Angeles and Allen looked at it as a good chance to learn something new. Co-owner Megan Hook is also a Montgomery County resident. The market and deli focuses on sustainable practices, sourcing locally, and has kosher bagels that come from Brooklyn. They offer a variety of food, including sandwiches, salads, and all-day breakfast.
Allen tells us he felt a sense of boredom when he came to the realization that CSNY could thrive on its own. With one of the sisters expressing interest in moving back to Los Angeles, the timing felt right to explore new horizons and learn something different in the culinary world. “I made the decision to branch out,” Allen told us. “I wanted to challenge myself and create a space that brings something unique to the deli experience. Pumpernickel & Rye is that opportunity.”
