School Closure/Delay Prediction For Monday, January 6th

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10pm Sunday night until 1am Tuesday morning for DC, portions of Maryland, and northern Virginia. With that comes the possibility for closures and delays, which we will get into tonight.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is expecting 6-8” for most of the DC metro area with a “high end amount” of 10-11” and a “low end amount” of 3 inches. Per the Winter Storm Warning, “Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 5 and 9 inches, with amounts of 10 to 12 inches possible in isolated spots if heavy banding sets up in this area.”

What does this mean for schools? The snow is expected to start late Sunday or early Monday and continue until  Monday afternoon or evening. Even if we have the low end scenario of 3 inches, with cold temperatures and snow falling from before the morning rush and into the afternoon rush, I can’t see any DMV school system opening on Monday (with DCPS being the only one with a shot at opening at all it the low end scenario was verify).

Pencil Prediction: 5 Pencils ✏️✏️✏️✏️✏️ (Pencil rating system available below followed by the National Weather Service maps). Note: Regardless of the prediction, everyone should always be prepared for a full day of school.
